After 5 years my existing E-Residency Card has expired, so I had and definitely wanted to renew it.

Application for update of E-Residency

The process for updating actually looks quite similar than applying for a new one (as I did 5 years ago), despite the fact that for the reason you only need to choose update. This time I needed an actual photo. The process from login to the service until issueing of the card took less than 2 weeks.

Pick up in Tallinn

In the application form you have to choose first your pick-up location for the card which must be an official Estonian location like an embassy or station of the police and border guards. As we collected our first card in the embassy in Berlin my friend Achim and me decided quickly to choose Tallinn this time.

So we booked flight and accomodation and queued up at the police station in Tallinn (see photo). Quite surprising are the opening hours until 5pm on a friday and our waiting time without reservation took only about 30 minutes.

New digital identity card

The officials checked pass photo, took finger prints and finally handed over our new cards, new USB-readers and new pin codes (see photo). The old card was revoked immediately, the new one was actived some hours later.
